Please see below for details.

Several procedures and criteria apply to the nomination/election of Council Representatives from SPTAs:

Membership. Council Representatives must be a member of the Division or State/Provincial/Territorial Association (SPTA) they are elected to represent and a Member of APA (APA Bylaws, Article V, Section 4).

One-year hiatus/Twelve-year limit. A Council member who has served for six consecutive years shall not be eligible for election or appointment for a period of one year as a Representative from any Division/SPTA. (APA Bylaws, Article V, Section 7). In addition, no individual may serve more than twelve years as a member of Council when representing a Division/SPTA or Ethnic Minority Psychological Association, whether as a representative or as an alternate unless an exemption has been granted by the Board of Directors (Association Rule 40-1.10).

Term of office. Representatives are elected for three-year terms. If during that three-year period the Division/SPTA is allocated fewer seats, the Division/SPTA must recall the appropriate number of representatives. The term of office of the recalled member is thereby terminated (APA Bylaws, Article V, Section 4). The three-year term will be January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028.

Representation. No person is eligible to represent more than one organization in Council at any one time (APA Bylaws, Article V, Section 4). Because of this, no person may be listed on an election ballot as a candidate to represent more than one voting unit (Association Rule 40-1.11).

Number of Candidates. There are to be at least two candidates on the final election ballot for each vacancy for Council representatives (not including write-ins). (Association Rule 40-1.12).
