Florida Psychological Association executive director Deborah Foote told Axios she and other members are concerned the course dispute could turn students off from pursuing psychology and other mental health careers in the midst of a statewide therapist shortage.

The Florida Psychological Association (FPA) opposes any effort from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) to modify AP Psychology’s approved course structure and teaching/delivery in Florida schools. AP Psychology has been taught for the past 25 years with a solid, evidence-based foundation of research and science.

Excluding science surrounding sexual orientation, gender identity, means students will receive incomplete education....
