John Bowlby's Theory of Attachment:  Part II Continued:  Separation, Anxiety, and Anger - Northeast Chapter


Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

(1) Identify ways in which Bowlby’s Attachment Theory extended and parted ways with the psychoanalytic thinking of his time with regards to etiology of symptoms.

(2) Identify ways in which the fields of biology and ethology contributed to Bowlby’s understanding of the development and maintenance of anxiety, fear, and other negative affective states.

(3) Apply attachment theory and findings to diagnosis and treatment of clinical presenting problems.

(4) Identify the association between traumatic and stressful attachment and problematic behaviors such as school refusal/separation anxiety, agoraphobia, and anxious attachment

(5) Identify the role of internal working models on attachment behavior

(6) Identify the concepts of omission, suppression, and internal conflict and how these concepts agree with and differ from classical psychoanalytic concepts of defense.
