FPA Releases Pride Month Statement

The Florida Psychological Association (FPA) proudly observes and celebrates Pride Month. LGBTQ+ people have been an integral part of human flourishing and civic engagement for centuries. Over the course of the 2023 Florida legislative session, an unprecedented number of bills to limit the rights of LGBTQ+ people were proposed and passed. These new laws target specific areas of life including access to healthcare, use of restrooms, access to education, barriers to participation in school sports and other school activities, and decreased representation in entertainment.

While we are saddened by the profound psychological impact that these efforts are having on Florida’s LGBTQ+ communities and allies, we also deeply respect and value the efforts put forth by evidence-informed advocates from all areas of the profession to protect and prevent potential harm to the LGBTQ+ community. FPA honors the LGBTQ+ community’s efforts, persistence, resilience, and love in the face of adversity and stands in solidarity this month and all year long. FPA wishes to express its unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community and will share valuable resources to learn about how psychologists can take action, participate in advocacy, and engage in grassroots efforts.
