Introductory Interdisciplinary Collaborative Practice Training - FPA Co-sponsored Event 


Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

(1) describe the differences between practicing collaboratively and practicing within the Collaborative Family Law model

(2) explain the distinct roles of the lawyer, mental health professional, and financial professional in the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Family Law model

(3) predict the general legal, financial, psychological and emotional elements of the family law client’s circumstances

(4) explain to a client how a professional Collaborative team works together to meet the various needs of family members in this type of divorce process

(5) discuss the specific boundaries and ethics common to each profession in this approach and unique to each profession in this approach

(6) list relevant ethical codes for psychologists who desire to participate in this model as Neutral Mental Health Professionals

(7) facilitate two team building exercises that can be used with Collaborative team colleagues to increase creative problem solving

(8) employ the skills needed by the mental health professional to facilitate effective meetings that advance the Collaborative process and create a beneficial client experience, including directing small group meetings, facilitating difficult conversations, guiding interest-based discussions, addressing implied emotional content, etc.

(9) utilize the Team Telephone Call Checklist to facilitate professional communication among team members

(10) apply the Interdisciplinary Collaborative approach to clients of all income levels including low income clients through the Barry University School of Law’s Collaborative Clinic program

(11) analyze the pros/cons of using the Interdisciplinary Collaborative approach versus other family law options in cases with a history of domestic violence

(12) articulate to victims of domestic violence the comparative pros/cons of this divorce approach when compared to other approaches for their situation

(13) facilitate one team building exercise that can be used with Collaborative team colleagues to increase creative problem solving regarding safety concerns when there are allegations of a history of domestic violence


Approved for 11 hours of general continuing education credits, 2 hours of professional ethics and Florida Laws and rules and 1 hour of domestic violence


Fees:  $550 for FPA Members; $575 for Non-FPA Members


Refund Policy:   Full refund with 3-week notice of cancellation; no refund with less than 3-week notice due to  the limited space in class but another participant may be substituted.
